What Bitcoin is and why it’s here to stay

Bitcoin’s network is 17-years old, unbroken, and growing. It has survived four market cycles, multiple government attempts to ban it, multiple exchange hacks, multiple 70%+ price crashes, and the collapse of its most prominent exchange. And despite this, it currently has approximately 5% global adoption (the equivalent of the internet’s adoption in the early 1990s), and growing fast, indeed at a much faster rate than the internet’s adoption rate. The Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance studies it, and the FCA now regulates products for it.

Bitcoin has achieved unprecedented returns over the last decade, rising from $960 per coin in 2016 to approx. $60,000 per coin today.

In this session, Dan helps us understand what Bitcoin is; what problem Bitcoin is trying to solve; why it has achieved those returns; what gives Bitcoin value. He debunks common misconceptions (volatility, criminality, energy consumption); and explores why it might continue achieving outsized returns over the coming years and decades.

Learning objectives:

  • What problem is Bitcoin solving?
  • What is Bitcoin?
  • What is not Bitcoin?
  • Why are Bitcoin and Crypto not the same?
  • What gives Bitcoin value?
  • Debunking common misconceptions (too volatile, only used by criminals, bad for the environment, not backed by anything, there’s not enough data, and it’s just Tulip Mania all over again).
